Indianapolis, Ind. – The IZOD IndyCar Series announced today its qualification rules for the second race on double-header weekends at Belle Isle, Toronto and Houston. For these events, the competitors will be split into two groups, running 12 minutes each with five minutes of guaranteed green-flag time. The new rule amends the previous one that called for a 30-minute session involving all cars.
According to the revised standard, qualifying groups will be determined by the combined times posted by the entrants during the previous day’s practice session. Group 1 will consist of odd-numbered positions on the practice charts and even-numbered positions will comprise Group 2. The starting field positions will be determined by the best time ranking of the two groups combined, from fastest to slowest, with the fastest qualifier occupying the pole position.
"Splitting qualifications for the second race will give a premium to the amount of track time available to each competitor," said Beaux Barfield, Race Director, IZOD IndyCar Series. "It will improve the ability for competitors to get a clean lap and post a true lap time."
Qualifications for Race 1 will follow the regular three-round format, including the Firestone Fast Six, for road and street circuits.
The IndyCar Series will host full-points, full-distance doubleheader races at Belle Isle (June 1-2), Toronto (July 13-14) and Houston (Oct. 5-6).
