FIRST TEST FOR INDY AURORA V8
Mt. Clemens, Mich. -- At 11:15 a.m. on Friday, September 20, the all-new Indy Aurora V8 roared to life in an instrumented dyno cell at Katech, Inc. in Mt. Clemens, Mich.
Under the watchful eyes of engineers from Oldsmobile and GM Motorsports, the new Indy Racing League version of the Motorsport Aurora V8 began its initial dyno tests. Only 261 days had passed since Oldsmobile general manager John Rock announced on January 4 that Oldsmobile would design and develop a 4.0-liter naturally aspirated engine to compete in the IRL series in 1997.
"It was very gratifying to see the Indy Aurora V8 run for the first time," said GM Motorsports IRL program manager Ed Keating. "But as soon as the engine fired up, we were already thinking about the next step."
"It was a relief when the engine started right up," Keating revealed, "but we weren't able to stop and celebrate the event. Everyone associated with this program is working under very tight deadlines, and there is still a great deal of work to be done both on the dyno and on the race track."
After a break-in procedure, the first Indy Aurora V8 successfully completed its initial power runs. The engine was then removed from the dyno and disassembled for inspection.
"If everything goes as planned, we'll complete the inspection, reassemble the engine, and have it back running on the dyno again in a few days," Keating reported. "The initial tests were very encouraging, but they are only the first steps in a continuous process of testing and development."
The new Indy Aurora V8 is based on the production 4.0-liter, 32-valve DOHC Aurora V8 that is available exclusively in Oldsmobile's flagship luxury performance sedan. The Indy Aurora V8 will make its competition debut at the IRL Indy 200 at Walt Disney World in Orlando, Fla., on January 25, 1997 -- the first race to be contested under the Indy Racing League's new 4.0-liter naturally aspirated engine formula.
