Delphi was named the recipient of the Louis Schwitzer Award this morning. After the presentation of the award, Delphi announced that the $5,000 award would be donated to the Sam Schmidt Paralysis Foundation.

Carl Fisher may have been playing his cards close to the vest when he assembled a group to build the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. On Monday, January 4, 1909, the Indianapolis Star reported that Fisher held a Saturday meeting at his garage, organizing the Aero Club of Indiana to "arouse interest in aerial navigation and to assist in perfecting the science of mechanical flight." Two days later the Star published a story about the purchase of several large tracts of land by Lemon H. Trotter in order to build an amusement park featuring a two or three mile "auto speeding park."

Automotive News published a list of automotive CEOs in their May 16 issue, ranking them by total compensation. The Captain, Roger Penske, ranked 24th on the list, earning $1,875,828 in 2004, down from the $2,141,250 he earned in 2003 as Chairman and CEO of United Auto Group. Just below the Captain holding the 25th spot was O. Bruton Smith, the only other giant of the industry directly involved in motorsports. As Chairman and CEO of Sonic Automotive, Smith earned $1,859.117 in 2004 and $1,542,187 in 2003. The list included CEOs of manufacturers, suppliers and dealer groups.

Ebay has provided a virtual marketplace for everything from previously chewed gum to folks selling advertising space on their body. While there was a recent listing for the latter from a west-side Indianapolis woman willing to display herself, and your ads, during the month of May, the online bazaar has hosted auctions for some interesting Indy 500 memorabilia recently. Salt Walther attempted to sell the remains of his wrecked car from 1973. In the auction's description Walther indicated that he was willing to personally deliver the car with the continental U.S. to provide an opportunity for a photo session with the new owner. Although the reserve was not disclosed an opening bid of $25,000 was unsuccessful. An autograph book containing the signatures of 140 different people, all associated with the Indy 500, sold for over $1,500 on Thursday. The book included luminaries like Ray Harroun, winner of the first Indy 500 in 1911, world champion Jack Brabham, Jim Clark and Bill Vukovich.
