Junqueira Pleased with First Day of Testing at Indianapolis Motor

INDIANAPOLIS (April 28, 2004) - Bruno Junqueira, 27, was pleased with the results from the first day of testing his No. 36 PacifiCare Honda/G-Force/Firestone race car around the 2.5-mile Indianapolis Motor Speedway (IMS) during the two-day Open Test in preparation for the 88th running of the Indianapolis 500. He completed 50 laps for a total of 125 miles and ranked 15th among 26 drivers who ran laps during the day. It was his first time to drive at IMS since the 2002 race where he started on pole and led the first 32 laps before engine failure ended his race.

"We are just learning about the car but I am pleased with our results today," said Junqueira, who will attempt to qualify for his third Indy 500 after participating in the event in 2001 and 2002. "We didn't run very much this morning but were able to put in more laps in the afternoon and by the end of the day the car had a good balance. For sure we were probably running more downforce than most teams today but we are taking things step by step. We were able to run consistent lap times and the balance of the car was good. The windy conditions were not ideal, it was making everything more difficult but you never know what the conditions will be in qualifying or the race so it is important to be prepared. You need a car that is good in all conditions."

NHR's Director of Special Operations Jim McGee was also pleased with the progress of the team on their first day on-track together. "We got off to a good start today," said McGee. "We didn't have any big issues with the car. It's new and the guys did a good job preparing it for today. We lost a little time this morning due to a gearbox issue but it was resolved and the rest of the day went well. We are getting a feel for the car and for each other. Overall everyone worked together well."

The team will complete the two-day test tomorrow and continue to prepare for opening day for the 88th Indianapolis 500 on Sunday, May 9.

Newman/Haas Racing is the second most successful open-wheel team racing today with 73 wins, 78 pole positions and 184 top-three podium finishes. The team is in the midst of their 22nd season of competition after being formed late in 1982. Current drivers Bruno Junqueira and Sebastien Bourdais were preceded at the team by Mario and Michael Andretti, Nigel Mansell, Paul Tracy, Christian Fittipaldi and Cristiano da Matta.
