Firestone Firehawk Fast Facts
Indy Racing League
Yamaha Indy 400 at California Speedway
March 22-24, 2002
Race Distance: 400 miles (200 laps on the two-mile oval).
Firehawks Supplied: Nine sets per car (total of 36 tires per car). The Firehawks for this weekend's competition feature new left- and right-side compounds (and a proven construction used in last year's IRL event at Kentucky). Teams had an opportunity to use these new tires during the "Test In The West" sessions at Fontana on Feb. 6.
2001 Firestone Results: This is the Indy Racing League's first racing appearance at California Speedway.
This Weekend's Event: California Speedway hosts the first long-track competition of the 2002 IRL season. While the Firestone brand has competed here before, many IRL teams and drivers are making their first race appearance at the two-mile oval. To make the IRL's initial visit go more smoothly, the Firestone Racing program supplied all teams participating in the February test here the same construction/compound combination of tires to be used this weekend. Having that familiarity with the tires' performance characteristics should allow most teams to set up their cars more quickly.
Quote from Firestone Motorsports Executive Director Al Speyer: "There are three words that sum up what you need to do for long races on superspeedways: Prepare, prepare, prepare. The Firestone engineers and chemists have done just that, developing a new tire for this weekend's event at Fontana. With this being the longest race on the biggest track since last year's Indianapolis 500, it's going to be a very demanding competition for drivers, teams and equipment. As everyone settles into the unique approach required for superspeedways, the Firehawk we've developed for this weekend should be a valuable asset in making all sessions go more smoothly. To ensure that happens, our engineers will work closely with all teams on inflation levels and car set-ups. While this partnership is important on all tracks, it is especially important on the big ones like Fontana."
