Kelley Racing ready for Yamaha Indy 400
Kelley Racing is geared up and ready to go in tomorrow's Yamaha Indy 400 at California Speedway. It is the Indy Racing League's first appearance at the 2-mile oval located in Fontana, Calif.
Earlier today, Al Unser Jr qualified his No. 7 Corteco/Bryant car in ninth position inside Row 5. He is currently sixth in Driver Points and believes tomorrow's event will be one of the most exciting races that fans have seen at California Speedway.
"It's going to be an exciting race, for sure," said Unser. "These cars are different than CART cars. Indy Racing cars have a lot more downforce so the fans are going to see a lot of side-by-side racing, two and three abreast, rather than single file like CART. Because of the side-by-side racing, you're going to need a good car that will work in the draft."
Unser's teammate Scott Sharp qualified his No. 8 Delphi car in 11th position and will start behind Unser inside Row 6. The Delphi team is geared up for tomorrow's race and ready to move up in the Driver's Championship.
"The Delphi guys worked real hard all weekend, and I've got a good car for the race," said Sharp. "Drafting is going to play a huge role tomorrow and we're ready. Our goal is to gain some points this weekend."
During qualifying today, No. 24 Robbie Buhl crashed in Turn 2 upon completion of his qualification run. If his team and IRL officials deem that his car is irreparable, Buhl will start at the rear of the field in his backup car rather than fifth position where he originally qualified. If this occurs, Unser and Sharp will move up one position and will start the race in 8th and 10th, respectively. Final determination will be made later today, or announced on race day morning.
The Yamaha Indy 400 will be broadcast live on ESPN at 3:30 p.m. (EST) on Sunday, March 24.
