Klein Tools/Jim Beam Driver Wheldon to start 10th at Chicago
JOLIET, Ill (Sept. 6, 2003) -- Dan Wheldon will start tomorrow's Delphi Indy 300 from the outside of the fifth row in the Klein Tools/Jim Beam Dallara/Honda/Firestone after qualifying tenth with a speed of 221.053 miles per hour.
After working on the car's race balance all day yesterday, the Klein Tools/Jim Beam crew turned their attention to the qualifying setup. After this morning's 30- minute practice session the team was confident they would have a solid car for qualifying.
Richie Hearn won the "MBNA Pole Award" in only his second start of the season with an average speed of 223.159 miles per hour. Tomas Scheckter was second fastest with a speed of 223.083 miles per hour. Felipe Giaffone, who is returning to the race car after breaking his leg at Kansas, will start third with an average speed of 222.646 miles per hour. Wheldon's teammate Bryan Herta will start seventh after posting a lap of 221.323 miles per hour. Tony Kanaan will start 14th after a lap at 220.006 miles per hour.
The green flag is scheduled to fly at 2 p.m. EDT tomorrow to start the Delphi Indy 300. The race will be broadcast live on ABC Sports. A live pre-race show will air on ESPN2 at noon EDT.
Dan Wheldon #26 Klein Tools/Jim Beam Dallara/Honda/Firestone
"It was a promising run for the Klein Tools/Jim Beam car. I would have liked for a little more out of it, but that is all we had. This Klein Tools/Jim Beam team has given us a good race car and that is the key to this race. The guys have done a great job in the pits for me, so I am looking forward to having a good race."
Tony Cotman, Klein Tools/Jim Beam, Team Manager
"The speed we qualified at is really all we had. Dan did a good job this morning and did a better job this afternoon. Tomorrow we are going to have to try some strategy to get to the front, but we've done it before and hopefully we'll do it again."
