After working on the car's race balance all day on Friday, the Klein Tools / Jim Beam crew turned their attention to the qualifying set-up yesterday at the Chicagoland Speedway. After yesterday morning's 30-minute practice session the team was confident they would have a solid car for qualifying.
Richie Hearn won the 'MBNA Pole Award', in only his second start of the season, with an average speed of223.159 mph. Tomas Scheckter was second fastest with a speed of 223.083 mph. Felipe Giaffone, who is returning to the race car after breaking his leg at Kansas, will start third with an average speed of 222.646 mph. Wheldon's team-mate Bryan Herta will start seventh after posting a lap of 221.323 mph. Tony Kanaan will start 14th after a lap at 220.006 mph.
The green flag is scheduled to fly at 2pm EDT today to start the Delphi Indy 300. The race will bebroadcast live on ABC Sports and can be seen live in the UK on Sky Sports 2 at 7pm. Edited highlights of the race will be on Five in the UK early on Thursday morning at 3.30am.
After yesterday's qualifying session, Dan Wheldon -- from Emberton in Buckinghamshire -- said:'It was a promising run for the Klein Tools / Jim Beam car. I would have liked for a little more out of it, but that is all we had. This Klein Tools / Jim Beam team has given us a good racecar and that is the key to this race. The guys have done a great job in the pits for me, so I am looking forward to having a good race.'< /FONT>
Tony Cotman, Klein Tools / Jim Beam, Team Manager, commented: 'The speed we qualified at is really all we had. Dan did a good job this morning and did a better job this afternoon. We are going to have to try some strategy to get to the front, but we've done itbefore and hopefully we'll do it again.'
