Firehawk Race Tires Supplied:

Firestone delivered 796 Firehawk racing radials for use this weekend. All were produced at the Firestone Technical Center in Akron, Ohio. Per IndyCar Series regulations, each entered car receives up to eight sets of tires (32 total) to be used at the team's discretion throughout the practice, qualifying and race sessions.

Firestone engineers have developed the latest generation in Firehawks for use on the IndyCar Series' popular 1.5-mile ovals and selected that new tire specification for use this weekend. The spec features the same compound and construction combination for the right-side tires run in recent IndyCar events on similar tracks at Kansas and Kentucky. The left-side tires are all new, with a compound formula that should deliver more grip than its predecessor.

Stagger Helps the Cars Go 'Round:

Firestone engineers purposely design the right rear tire to have a diameter slightly larger than that of the left rear tire for oval competition. The size differential is minor - just 0.45 of an inch this weekend - but the effect, called "stagger," helps the IndyCars turn left more naturally and smoothly - and decreases the stresses on car and driver alike.

Quote from Al Speyer, Executive Director, Firestone Racing:

"Just as teams vying for the championship are pulling out all the stops for the stretch run, Firestone has continued its development effort to give teams and drivers the best possible Firehawks available. It's resulted in a new generation tire debuting this weekend. We're confident everyone would have been quite satisfied had we returned with the same tire used at Chicagoland a year ago, but our quest is to constantly update and improve the Firestone race tires so that they set the pace in this most competitive and exciting series."

The Official Tire of the IRL:

Firestone is the exclusive tire supplier to the Indy Racing League for both the IndyCar and Infiniti Pro series. The IPS resumes this weekend as well with the 10th of its 12-race season Saturday at Chicagoland Speedway, as competitors in the IRL driver development series chase the Firehawk Cup presented to the points champion.
