MIAMI (March 23, 2001) -- Airton Dare, the 2000 Indy Racing Rookie of the Year, and an Indy Racing car will make two South Florida appearances this weekend to promote the April 6-8 Infiniti Grand Prix of Miami presented by 123.com Americatel.
Dare will throw out the first pitch for Saturday's exhibition baseball game between the Baltimore Orioles and Las Angeles Dodgers, and will be a special guest at the Homestead-Miami Speedway booth during Sunday's "Taste of the Bay -- A Preview to the Volvo Ocean Race" at the American Airlines Arena. The driver will be signing autographs both days.
The Excite@Home race car driven by 1998 Indianapolis 500 winner Eddie Cheever Jr. will also be on display both days.
Dare, a 23-year-old native of Bauru, Brazil who lives in Miami, opened the 2001 Indy Racing Northern Light Series campaign with a 10th place finish last weekend in Phoenix. A second place finish at Pike's Peak highlighted his rookie season, which included a solid run in the Indy 500 in which he was running fourth before being sidelined by engine failure on lap 125. He was a five-time jet-ski champion in Brazil before moving to Miami to race in Indy Lights, winning two races in that series.
First pitch at Fort Lauderdale Stadium will be just before 1 p.m. Dare will remain to sign autographs.
The Excite@Home Indy Racing car will be on display from 1-10 p.m. in the "Taste of the Bay." Dare will be signing autographs in the Homestead-Miami Speedway booth from 5-7 p.m.
Tickets for the Infiniti Grand Prix of Miami presented by 123.com Americatel will be on sale at the Homestead-Miami Speedway booth during "Taste of the Bay." Sunday ticket purchasers have their choice of a free t-shirt or hat, while purchasers of a $20 Saturday ticket will receive a free Indy Fan Access Pack Card, which is redeemable at the Speedway during race weekend. The Fan Access Pack will include Indy Racing merchandise, highlight video, die-cast Indy Racing car and interactive CD-ROM.
Family-friendly priced tickets for the April 6-8 Infiniti Grand Prix of Miami begin at $10 for Friday and $20 for Saturday, with reserved Sunday grandstand seats ranging from $25 to $45.
