Orlando, Florida, January 21, 2000 - Indy Racing League Driver, Davey Hamilton, has been given the opportunity to uphold his record for being the only driver to compete in every Indy Racing League event. Through a lot of hard work and a bit of luck, Hamilton has secured a ride for the Delphi 200 at Walt Disney World Speedway on January 29.
Hamilton's entry will be the Sinden Racing Spinal Conquest Dallara Aurora Firestone, but the effort to get him into the first race comes with the help and support of his 1999 car owner, Rick Galles.
"Basically, Rick and Sinden Racing funded this one race together. We have been looking for sponsorship for quite a few months now, and Rick really felt it was important to run at Orlando. He got together with Jeff Sinden and Joe Kennedy and funded the thing. Last year we came here at the last minute and Sinden helped us with equipment and some manpower. Rick thought they did a great job and felt he could entrust our effort in them," says Hamilton.
Hamilton's primary sponsor in 1999, Spinal Conquest, will be displayed as a sponsor on the car at the IRL Disney event.
"I believe in Spinal Conquest, and I want to continue to support their efforts. If racing with an toll free number on the side of my car will help get people like Sam Schmidt walking again, then I will do whatever I can to promote the cause," says Hamilton.
Galles, who recently signed driver Al Unser Jr. to race for his team, Galles ECR Racing, is excited that Hamilton will get a chance to run at Orlando.
"Davey is a great driver, and I absolutely believe in his talent so I felt it was important to show my commitment to him. We are still looking for funding for the rest of the year, and now Sinden has joined in to help us put something together. If we were able to help find money for Davey to run for the year under the Sinden team I would be comfortable with that.
Jeff Sinden has a great deal of experience in this industry, and I feel they will do a great job running Davey at Orlando. After that, we will just have to see what falls into place. Davey has been a key part of our racing program, and I just could not let that fall by the wayside. It means a lot to me that we can continue to gain exposure for Spinal Conquest through Davey's program. They will also be a small associate sponsor on Al's car," says Galles.
Jeff Sinden, Sinden Racing Car Owner, feels good about their effort to run Davey at Orlando.
"Davey is a good driver, and he is a finisher. I think we have a shot at running well here, and I am glad we could put something together. We had help from a lot of people from John Menard with our motors, to partial race day sponsorships from various companies. We would love to run Davey for the rest of the year, and we are working with Rick to help achieve that goal," says Jeff Sinden.
Although Hamilton will not be racing for Galles, there will be a Galles in his pit on race day. Jamie Galles, Hamilton's former engineer who is the son of Rick Galles, will engineer Hamilton's car for the weekend.
"Jamie and I have a great relationship, and we speak the same language. He will be a great addition to the Sinden crew next week, and I think he will help us be competitive. It is definitely going to be a team effort, and I am glad to have Joe Kennedy as my crew chief. He has a great deal of experience, and coming into the game this late, that experience will be a key factor to our program," says Hamilton.
Race fans can watch Hamilton race for the checkered flag in the Sinden Racing Spinal Conquest, on January 29. Live coverage of the event will begin at noon (EST) on ABC.
