Firestone Firehawk) Race Tires Supplied:
* 804 dry-condition slicks; each car receives nine sets (36 tires) for the race weekend. Firestone Fast Six qualifiers receive one additional set of slicks for that session.
* 320 wet-condition grooved tires; each car receives four sets (16 tires) of rain tires.
Selection of the Firehawk tires for Detroit is based on Firestone's extensive racing history on Belle Isle, combined with analyzed data of the changes made to the circuit since open-wheel cars last competed there in 2001. Firestone opted to bring its midrange street-course compound for the dry-condition tires and its "softer," street-course rain tire.
Firestone Takes Ownership in Racing's Return to Detroit: Firestone became presenting sponsor of the Detroit Indy Grand Prix with greater community awareness in mind. Several company divisions have been involved in activities leading to race weekend. The Firestone Complete Auto Care Center on Woodward Avenue was a hub of activity for the legendary Woodward Dream Cruise on August 18, entertaining fans with displays, racing simulators and an appearance from IndyCar Series driver Dan Wheldon. Firestone's Original Equipment Consumer Tire Division, based in Detroit, joined with Firestone Racing to underwrite renovation of a Belle Isle playground that included all-new equipment and installation of a playground surface made from environmentally friendly recycled rubber developed by Bridgestone Firestone Diversified Products. Drawings were also held to give away race tickets at the 19 Firestone Complete Auto Care Centers in Detroit.
From Al Speyer, Executive Director, Firestone Racing: "Firestone is tremendously happy to see racing return to Detroit. Roger Penske's promotion group, headed by Bud Denker, has done a fantastic job in orchestrating this event and getting sponsors to join in the initiative to revitalize Detroit. I am proud that Firestone has become so involved in that effort. The race itself should be a very good one on the improved circuit. We've followed development of the track closely and even attended the demonstration laps run by Helio Castroneves last month to get a firsthand look at the tire performance. The Firestone engineers settled on our midrange street-course compound tire, one that's a bit more durable than the Firehawks we used on the temporary street course in St. Petersburg in April. It should stand up well to the rigors of Belle Isle and contribute to another exciting IndyCar Series race. As presenting sponsor of the race, we've been actively involved in its promotion. Firestone will have extensive signage and branding around Belle Isle, including the walkover bridge that fans will use to enter the infield. We'll entertain 600 Firestone associates and guests on race day, and we're certain they will have a wonderful experience."
