Gil de Ferran completes successful Texas Indy Racing test

FORT WORTH-DALLAS (January 10, 2002) - Indianapolis 500 runnerup Gil de Ferran and Marlboro Team Penske continued their preparation for the 2002 season Thursday with a successful Indy Racing test session at Texas Motor Speedway.

The Marlboro team and de Ferran were preparing for the June 8 Casino Magic 500 and the season-closing Chevy 500 on September 15. Driver de Ferran and team members were pleased with the day's results.

"We are just trying to get some miles on the car and learn as much as we can about the Indy Racing cars here at Texas," de Ferran said. "It has been a good day, we have collected a lot of data already."

The Marlboro team and de Ferran tested using a 2001 Dallara chassis, minus the 2002 Indy Racing League update kit that will be installed soon. Team manager Tom Wirtz was happy with what they learned in the one-day session, both with chassis information and the laps over the 1.5-mile superspeedway that was resurfaced last year.

Team driving advisor and Indy 500 winner Rick Mears was present throughout the session.

Helio Castroneves, the defending Indianapolis 500 winner, will join de Ferran in search of victory lane during the two Indy Racing League events at Texas Motor Speedway this year. Last year's Chevy 500 Indy Racing League finish produced the closest one-two-three result in series history.

Tickets for the Casino Magic 500 and the Chevy 500 are on sale at the speedway ticket office, by calling the ticket hotline at (817) 215-8500 or online at www.texasmotorspeedway.com. Season tickets are also available, starting at $170. Season tickets include two Indy Racing League events, the NASCAR Winston Cup and Busch races and two NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series shows.
