INDIANAPOLIS, Wednesday, Jan. 19, 2000 - 1999 Indy Racing League champion Greg Ray today became the record third Indy Racing driver to be invited to participate in the 2000 True Value International Race of Champions series. Ray, from Plano, Texas, joins Indy Racing rivals Eddie Cheever Jr. and Mark Dismore in racing's "all-star game" featuring 12 of the best drivers in the world competing in identically prepared stock cars. It's the first time that more than two Indy Racing League drivers will participate in the True Value IROC series in one season.
"To compete against these other great drivers from the Winston Cup, Busch Series and Indy Racing League will be an exciting opportunity," Ray said.
"Hopefully I can gain tremendous experience through this invitation, and I'm very grateful to the True Value IROC organizers for including me." Also named to the field Jan. 19 were reigning IROC champion Dale Earnhardt, a seven-time NASCAR Winston Cup Series champion; two-time NASCAR Busch Grand National Series champion Dale Earnhardt Jr. and former IROC and NASCAR Winston Cup champion Rusty Wallace.
Previously named to the field were Cheever, Dismore, and NASCAR Winston Cup standouts Jeff Gordon, Bobby Labonte and Tony Stewart. The remaining three drivers in the field will be named shortly. Ray won a league-best three races and four poles in the Team Menard Dallara/Aurora/Firestone in 1999 en route to the $1 million Indy Racing League championship. He led a league-high 464 laps. The 2000 True Value IROC series starts Feb. 18 at Daytona International Speedway. The final round of the four-race series is Aug. 4 at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
Ray, Cheever and Dismore will start the Indy Racing League season Jan. 29 in the Delphi Indy 200 at Walt Disney World Speedway in Orlando, Fla.
