87th Indianapolis 500:
-- Five Indianapolis 500 champions are entered for the Indianapolis 500: Arie Luyendyk (1990, 1997), Al Unser Jr. (1992, 1994), Buddy Lazier (1996), Kenny Brack (1999) and Helio Castroneves (2001, 2002).
-- Five IRL IndyCar Series champions are entered in the Indianapolis 500: Scott Sharp (1996 co-champion), Kenny Brack (1998), Greg Ray (1999), Buddy Lazier (2000) and Sam Hornish Jr. (2001, 2002). A.J. Foyt IV, the 2002 Infiniti Pro Series champion and grandson of four-time Indianapolis 500 winner A.J. Foyt, also will attempt to qualify.
-- Drivers entered in the 87th Indianapolis 500 have accounted for 157 IRL or CART wins, 12 IRL or CART championships and eight Indianapolis 500 wins. Teams that have entered cars for the "500" have tallied 19 Indianapolis 500 wins and 27 IRL or CART championships.
-- Michael Andretti, who has led 398 laps in 13 races at Indianapolis, the most of any driver without a win, will retire as a driver following the 87th Indianapolis 500.
-- Helio Castroenves, one of only five drivers to win consecutive Indianapolis 500-Mile Races, having won in 2001 and 2002, will attempt to become the first driver to win three "500s" in a row.
IndyCar Series:
-- Both events in the 2003 IRL IndyCar Series season that have finished under green have featured a finish of less than one second. At the season-opening Toyota Indy 300 on March 2 at Homestead-Miami Speedway, Scott Dixon defeated Gil de Ferran by .5752 of a second for victory. At the Purex Dial Indy 200 on March 23 at Phoenix International Raceway, Tony Kanaan defeated Helio Castroneves by .9328 of a second. The Phoenix race was the 29th time an IndyCar Series event had a margin of victory of less than a second. The Indy Japan 300 on April 13 ended under caution.
-- Scott Dixon won the Toyota Indy 300 on March 2 at Homestead-Miami Speedway in his first IRL IndyCar Series event. The only other times a driver has won the race in his first start was when Juan Montoya won the 84th Indianapolis 500 in 2000 and when Buzz Calkins won the inaugural series event in January 1996 at Orlando, Fla. Montoya drove for Target Chip Ganassi Racing, as does Dixon.
-- Scott Sharp won the Indy Japan 300 on April 13 at Twin Ring Motegi, giving him a record-tying eighth IndyCar Series win. Sam Hornish Jr. and Buddy Lazier also have won eight races. Sharp's victory marked the seventh consecutive season Sharp has scored a victory, a series record.
