INDIANAPOLIS, May 26 - Great Indy stories that stand the test of time often aren't about the big, well-funded teams. Sometimes the best stories are the ones that show the heart and the sacrifices made by some of the smaller teams that put it all on the line for the sake of three words: This is Indy.

Cahill Racing and Robby McGehee (pronounced Mc-GEE) are already one of those stories in tomorrow's Indy 500.

A week before practice opened at Indy this year, both of Cahill Racing's Dallaras were badly damaged in an 11-car crash at Atlanta. Neither car was insured.

There was nothing left of one of Cahill's cars, Dr. Jack Miller's
Dallara. Miller is not competing here at Indy this year.

McGehee's Dallara was badly damaged in that crash too. In addition to the financial challenges and time constraints, it was difficult to locate en ough spare parts to repair McGehee's car in time.

Somehow the Cahill Racing team accomplished that, but McGehee didn't get much practice here at all this month. He hasn't had much practice at all this year period due to a lack of sponsorship and the fact that his deal with Larry Cahill came together so late in the off-season.

That's why his qualifying speed of 222.607 mph on Pole Day for 14th place on the starting line-up is so impressive.

Of the 11 drivers involved in the Atlanta crash, only Robbie Buhl qualified better (ninth), and his car has a primary sponsor. McGehee's does not.

McGehee qualified tenth at Atlanta. He was the fastest driver in the field for the first 10 laps of that race.

Tomorrow during the Indy 500 it will be interesting to see if he can pick up where he left off at Atlanta before the big crash. The "dark horse" in the race just might be McGehee's black Dallara.

No matter what, both he and the Cahill Racing team have already recorded an impressive performance here this month.
