For their debut race with an Infiniti engine, the CURB Records team made the manufacturer proud by finishing highest in their class - 9th place - at the Ameristar Casino Indy 200 today in Kansas City.
"A top 10 finish for the CURB Records car," says Billy Boat and then explains: "We had a good, competitive race car early in the race. We fought a bit of a balance problem in traffic throughout the race, but we were able to run with the lead pack. Towards the end of the race, after our last pit stop we had a fuel pressure problem with the engine and lost quite a bit of horsepower, which slowed us down a lot. We just kind of held on at the end for a Top 10 finish."
Airton Dare, the driver of the #14 Harrah's/A.J. Foyt Racing car captured his first IRL victory. After race leader Tomas Scheckter crashed in Lap 191, Sam Hornish, Jr. took over the lead for eight laps, until Dare passed him on the outside going into Turn 3. This was the second win of the day for Harrah's/AJ Foyt racing -- A.J. Foyt IV won the inaugural Indy Racing Infiniti Pro Series earlier in the day.
The average speed of today's race -- 178.527 mph is the second fastest in league history. The record was set earlier this year at the California Speedway, where Sam Hornish Jr. won with an average speed of 179.345.
The race was remarkably incident free with only one crash and relatively few yellow caution laps. The incredibly high temperatures and humidity, did however, play havoc with many of the 23 race cars and drivers on the track. Veteran driver and Indianapolis 500 winner Al Unser, Jr. was treated for overheating -- the same diagnosis given to his car -- eliminating them both in Lap 189.
The 9th place finish put Boat back into 11th place in the IRL Points Standings with a total of 158 season points to date. The team will now get ready for the Firestone Indy 200 on July 20, 2002 at the Nashville Speedway.
Boat looks forward to his next race and more success with his new engine, "The guys did a great job in the pits; we're doing better and better each race. We'll just continue to work hard and look towards Nashville, the home of CURB Records, which is a place we ran well last year and we're looking for to going to this year."
