SPARTA, Ky., Aug. 11 Robby McGehee duplicated his best qualifying run of the season to date by qualifying tenth Saturday afternoon for Sunday's Belterra Casino Indy 300 Indy Racing event at Kentucky Speedway.
McGehee also started tenth at the race at Atlanta Motor Speedway in April.
McGehee's Cahill Racing/Parallaxmusic.com/Dollar Rent-a-Car/Pringles/Cincinnati Airport Marriott Dallara/Aurora/Firestone #10 will start on the outside of row five beside Al Unser Jr. tomorrow. Current point leader Buddy Lazier and the top rookie this year, Felipe Giaffone, will be right behind them.
McGehee's official qualifying speed was set in his first of two laps and was 210.266 mph.
A few hours earlier McGehee ran a lap at 212.370 in practice, which was the sixth-fastest speed of that session. He was ninth for the day in practice on Friday; the fastest of the 93 laps he ran that day was at 211.855 mph.
"I'm a little baffled," said McGehee, who walked to his car without crutches for the first time since breaking his left leg in an accident at Texas Motor Speedway on June 9. "We lost 2 mph and I don't know why.
"The Cahill Racing car has been running great and it's very comfortable," he added. "If we would have gone as fast as we went in practice this morning we would have been in better shape, but this is where we are and we'll work from here."
If McGehee could have duplicated his morning run he would have qualified fourth, behind only polesitter Scott Sharp, Mark Dismore and Eddie Cheever Jr.
McGehee said he thinks there will be two grooves in the racetrack for tomorrow's race, which will be broadcast live on ABC at 1:30 p.m. EDT preceded by a pre-race show on ESPN2 at 11 a.m. EDT.
"This track demands a lot and it takes a toll on equipment," McGehee explained. "It's pretty bumpy coming out of turn two, but it's not too bad with my car. My engineer, John Hayes, is very good with shocks.
"We'll do our best to drive a smart race tomorrow and hope for another top 10. The team has great momentum now, coming off the fourth at Nashville."
McGehee hopes that the Cahill Racing team will celebrate another great finish tomorrow night to continue the party it held Friday night at the Cincinnati Airport Marriott.
"I want to wish Gloria Cahill and her sister both a happy birthday, and Mike and Diana Horvath a happy 27th wedding anniversary," McGehee said. "We celebrated with them last night at the Cincinnati Airport Marriott, which is one of our associate sponsors this weekend."
Thanks to Think First, McGehee also has something special planned for the children who line up for his autograph at a special autograph session tomorrow in the garage area at the track. McGehee is a national spokesperson for that not-for-profit group that stresses safety.
When children ask McGehee for his autograph tomorrow, he's also going to ask them for theirs. Think First developed a special poster for the occasion which McGehee will ask the children to sign, pledging that they'll wear seat belts and bicycle helmets and "think first" about safety.
Think First will also distribute free coloring books to the children.
