Race Distance: 400 miles (200 laps around the two-mile superspeedway).
Firehawk Race Tires Supplied: Firestone delivered 924 Firehawk racing radials for use this weekend. All were produced at the company's technical center in Tokyo, Japan. At the direction of Indy Racing League officials, each entered car will receive nine sets of Firehawks (36 total tires) this weekend, to be used at its team's discretion throughout practice, qualifying and race sessions. The tire specification for this weekend comes from the renowned line of Firestone superspeedway tires. It is very similar to the spec used last year at MIS that provided so much tire-to-tire racing excitement, with a slight change to the right-side tires that should yield no discernible difference in performance.
Firestone in the Indy Racing League: The Michigan Indy 400 marks the 97th event since the IRL IndyCar Series' debut in 1996 - and Firestone has been there for every race. The only tire manufacturer to have participated in every IRL event, Firestone is now in its ninth season of IRL competition and fifth as sole supplier to the league, with 79 victories and seven of the league's nine championships to date. Again this season, Firestone is commemorating its status as the only tire manufacturer to have competed in every IRL race with the Firestone Performance Award, presented to the driver leading the race lap that corresponds with the cumulative number of IndyCar Series races to that point. This weekend's winner will be the leader of lap 97 and be presented a $10,000 check from Firestone Racing during pre-race festivities at the Belterra Casino Indy 300 at Kentucky Speedway on Aug. 15.
Quote from Al Speyer, Executive Director, Firestone Racing: "The wide variety of IRL racetracks and the challenges each one poses a tire supplier have been on display these past three weekends. First it was the abrasive concrete of Nashville, followed by the flat, tight Milwaukee Mile. Now we arrive at Michigan, a wide-open superspeedway that tests a race tire with incredibly high speeds, lap after lap after lap. But the Firestone tires have shown time and time again how well they stand up to the demands of MIS, going back to the first race win in the modern Firestone open-wheel era in 1995. We're proud to say that Firestone has won every race in which it has competed at MIS in this era, and we're looking forward to adding another name to that victory chart this weekend."
