Firehawk Race Tires Supplied:

Firestone delivered 780 dry-condition Firehawk race tires (slicks) for use. All were produced at the Bridgestone Technical Center near Tokyo, Japan. Per IRL rules, Firestone brings a single specification to oval events, assuring all competitors the same quality race tire. Each car receives nine sets of slicks (36 total tires) for the race weekend, to use as its team determines in the practice, qualifying and race sessions. Firestone Racing engineers opted to return to Michigan with a well-proven tire specification. The Firehawk racing radials slated for use this weekend hail from the identical spec that was run last year at Michigan International Speedway and California Speedway.

Quote from Al Speyer, Executive Director, Firestone Racing:

"Returning to Michigan always is enjoyable for us, especially this weekend because race day for the Firestone Indy 400 falls on the exact 11-year anniversary of Firestone's first win in our modern era of open-wheel competition. Scott Pruett drove to victory on Firehawk tires at MIS on July 30, 1995, beginning what has become an unimaginable and incredible string of success for the Firestone Racing program in open-wheel competition. Nowhere is that more evident than here because Firestone has been the winning tire every time it has competed on this track since that Pruett triumph. That's a streak of 12 straight victories, the first six coming against direct and fierce tire competition. What's more, those 12 Michigan wins have been accomplished by 12 different drivers, with no repeat winners. That is a testament to the tremendous consistency of the Firestone tires over the years, allowing everyone the same great performance and opportunity for victory. The Firehawk tires selected for this weekend's Firestone Indy 400 have already shown they can stand up to the rigors of these two-mile superspeedways and contribute to the exciting tire-to-tire competition we've come to expect in the IndyCar Series. We look forward to another great race and another Firestone winner at Michigan."

Firestone Performance Award: Firestone Racing continues presenting this award in conjunction with each IndyCar Series event in 2006. The $10,000 bonus commemorates Firestone's status as the only tire manufacturer to have participated in every IRL race, and is traditionally given to the driver who, at each event, leads the lap number corresponding to the cumulative number of races in series history. The Firestone Indy 400 is the 131st IndyCar Series race, so the award will go to the driver who leads lap 131.
