Giaffone & Fisher pull out top G Force runs at Michigan.

Felipe Giaffone and Sarah Fisher put recent aerodynamic improvements to the 2002 G Force chassis to good effect with strong runs in today's Michigan Indy 400.

Giaffone and Fisher finished 3rd and 8th respectively on the 2.5 mile track in a blanket finish which had the top nine cars separated by only 3 seconds at the checkered flag.

Giaffone and Fisher diced for the lead with twenty laps to go, running one-two at the front of the field.

Giaffone looked set to earn his first IRL victory until passed by Thomas Scheckter with only seven laps remaining.

"I knew it would be tough to beat those Cheever cars so what we did was concentrate on the race from the first day we got here," Giaffone said.

"We just worked on the race setup and it seemed to work very well. That's why we didn't qualify that well; we're not very worried about qualifying as the race is 400 miles long.

"We were right there with the car today. I'm really pleased with my team."

Giaffone's G Force finished the event as the top Chevrolet powered car, only being out-paced by the Infinity cars of Scheckter and Rice around the high-speed Michigan track.

Fisher was more fortunate than team-mate Robbie Buhl whose race ended with engine dramas after 95 laps.

"It makes it easy on the driver when the car is so good," Fisher said.

"We ran some different lines during practice, both low and high lines, which prepared us for the race. I could drive the car high or low.

"In sprintcars, you use a move called a slide job, and today we were the only car who could run it. It was a great move for this track.

"Michigan is a really good, raceable track, and we were well prepared. I had a lot of fun, really driving my butt off.

"I was able to race with the top guys in points for the first time in three years. We're definitely getting there."

Other G Force runners included Arie Luyendyk (16th), George Mack (20th - delayed by electrical problems) and Jeff Ward who was classified as 25th after crashing on lap 91.

Part of Don Panoz's Elan Motorsport Technologies organization, the G Force headquarters in Georgia features full in-house design, fabrication, machining and composite construction facilities.

The largest manufacturer of racing cars in the world, the Elan group includes G Force, Formula Ford expert Van Dieman, leading American Le Mans Series team Panoz Motor Sports and specialist services companies Elan Power Products, Elan Precision and Elan Composites.
