Sharp Takes Seventh at Michigan

Despite a car that was a bit of a handful at times, Scott Sharp managed to bring the #8 Delphi machine home in seventh place this afternoon in the Firestone Indy 400. The result is Sharp's seventh top-seven finish of the season, and his fourth top-10 result in as many starts on the Michigan International Speedway oval. Sharp dropped a position in the championship standings to seventh as Bryan Herta moved ahead with his win this afternoon. However, Sharp has shortened the gap and currently sits 15 points out of fifth position.

Scott Sharp, #8 Delphi Panoz/Honda/Firestone: "It was a pretty good day for the Delphi team. Like a lot of other cars out here running in the big pack, we kept having to work on the car to make it better. The best we really had the car was at the end. We ran most of our best string of laps then. I was able to get Dario [Franchitti] on the last lap. We leave with good points, and now we just have to go on to Kentucky."

SCOTT SHARP FAST FACTS: This was his fourth IndyCar Series start at Michigan-- has claimed four top-10 results at Michigan with a best finish of fourth in 2003-- has recorded four top-five finishes to date this season, and seven top-seven finishes-- currently sits seventh in the championship standings-- best qualifying effort to date this season was third at Japan and Indianapolis-- this was his 109th IndyCar Series start and record 101st consecutive start-- is in his 10th season of IndyCar Series competition, and is the only driver to have contested every season of IndyCar Series competition since the inception of the IRL 10 years ago-- career record includes eight wins, five pole positions and 31 top-five finishes-- was the 1996 IndyCar Series co-champion and the 2001 Indianapolis 500 MBNA Pole winner-- is a former two-time SCCA Trans-Am Champion and three-time SCCA National Champion-- 37 years old from Norwalk, Connecticut-- currently resides in Jupiter, Florida.

Adrian Fernandez, Team Owner: "We can see that we have a problem. The Panoz chassis is not up to the competition right now. None of the Panoz cars are strong but we are trying to make the car more competitive. It is just not very good in traffic and everybody with that chassis is in the same boat. Scott and Kosuke did a good job today but, unfortunately, they just couldn't work in the traffic. We need some help to get the car more competitive."

Chris Finch, Race Engineer: "Scott did a really did good job today, so did the whole crew. This Panoz chassis is difficult to set up for these hot conditions. We just kept working on it. We had a good car yesterday and a good car this morning but as soon as the weather turned real hot, the car was not good in traffic and not terribly good on its own. We just have to keep working at it and try to make it better."
