Deputising forthe injured Dario Franchitti, the 24-year old English driver -- making his debut for Andretti Green Racing in Franchitti's No. 27 Alpine / Archipelago / Motorola Dallara / Honda / Firestone -- started from fifth place on the grid and did well to avoid several major accidents involving other drivers.

Television viewers in England can see the race tonight on Sky Sports 2 at 10pm or on Five on Tuesday night / Wednesday morning at 1.15 am.

Wheldon competed in his first two IndyCar Series races for Panther Racing last year. In 1999 he won the US Formula Ford 2000 Championship and was Rookie of the Year. He came second in both the CART Toyota Atlantic Championship (2000) and the CART Dayton Indy Lights Championship (2001) and was Rookie of the Year in both series.

Dan Wheldon's next IRL IndyCar Series event is the 87th Indianapolis 500 on 25May. Practice for the event opens Sunday 4 May at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
