FIRESTONE FIREHAWK FAST FACTS
Indy Racing League IndyCar Series
Bridgestone Indy Japan 300 - Twin Ring Motegi, Motegi, Japan
April 20-22, 2006 - Round 3 of 16
Race Distance: 300 miles or 482.80 kilometers (200 laps around the 1.5-mile oval).
Firehawk Race Tires Supplied: Firestone shipped 700 Firehawk racing radials for use this weekend. All were produced at the Firestone Technical Center in Akron, Ohio. At the direction of Indy Racing League officials, each entered car receives eight sets of Firehawks (32 total tires) this weekend, to be used at its team's discretion throughout the practice, qualifying and race sessions. The tire specification selected for this weekend's race features the same sidewall construction as used last season at Twin Ring Motegi, with an updated compound formula that should yield better wear characteristics while also improving the grip level for the right-side tires.
Quote from Al Speyer, Executive Director, Firestone Racing: "We're thrilled again to be headed back for our 'other home race' this weekend in Japan. With Bridgestone Firestone's global headquarters in Tokyo, it's natural for us to be involved with the Motegi race, and we're proud to return as title sponsor. Many Bridgestone executives and teammates will be in attendance to support this exciting international event and welcome the IRL back to Japan. The Firestone engineers and chemists have shown yet again why they are recognized as one of the finest race tire development groups around the globe. Most times when a tire compound is developed that yields better wear, it trades away some grip that drivers crave. Yet the new compound the Firestone staff has created should improve both wear and grip on the right-side tires that take such a beating on these fast ovals. Best of all, the tires we've brought for Motegi will provide a great preview for the month of May because we're bringing the same specification for use in the Indianapolis 500."
Firestone Performance Award: Commemorating Firestone's status as the only tire manufacturer to have participated in every IRL event in league history, the Firestone Performance Award is given in each IndyCar Series event to the driver leading the lap number corresponding to the total number of IndyCar races run to that point. This weekend, the leader of lap 123 earns the award. Helio Castroneves of Marlboro Team Penske will receive a $10,000 check in pre-race festivities at Motegi for claiming the Firestone Performance Award three weeks ago in the Honda Grand Prix of St. Petersburg.
