Firestone Firehawk Fast Facts
Indy Racing League IndyCar Series - Round 3 of 16
Bridgestone Indy Japan 300 at Twin Ring Motegi, Japan
Firehawks Supplied: The Firestone Racing program brought 1,078 Firestone Firehawk racing radials to Twin Ring Motegi for the Bridgestone Indy Japan 300, enough to provide eight sets per car as determined by Indy Racing League officials.
Of this total, 778 tires were mounted on teams' wheels prior to being loaded on planes for last week's travel from the United States to Japan. The remaining 300 will be mounted as needed at Twin Ring Motegi.
The Firehawks were produced at the Akron, Ohio, Technical Center, and were tested at Twin Ring Motegi in November 2002. The compound/construction combination for this event will not be used at any other track this year.
Quote from Al Speyer, Firestone Racing Executive Director: "Twin Ring Motegi is something of a 'home track' for us since our parent company - Bridgestone Corporation - is headquartered in Tokyo. While we race at several mile-and-a-half ovals throughout the course of the season, Twin Ring Motegi has its own unique characteristics, requiring an equally unique Firehawk racing tire. The compound/construction combination for this race will only be used once this year, providing evidence of our continuing commitment to supply the most appropriate tire for every event. In November last year, using 2002 IRL champion Sam Hornish Jr. as our test driver, we evaluated several compounds and constructions for this race. The Firehawk we selected was the one that performed best in that test, and we expect it to perform well in this weekend's competition."
Understanding the Bridgestone/Firestone Connection: In 1988, Bridgestone Corporation (based in Tokyo) acquired Firestone Tire & Rubber Co. (based in Akron, Ohio). In 1990, the United States operations were consolidated as Bridgestone/Firestone Inc. The current name of the United States-based organization is Bridgestone Americas Holding, Inc. The Firestone brand has been involved in racing since 1909, winning events and championships around the world in a variety of series.
