Firestone Indy 225
Race 4 of 15, Indy Racing League Championship
Nazareth Speedway, Nazareth, Pa.
April 21, 2002
Cheever finishes seventh in Firestone Indy 225 at Nazareth.
Eddie Cheever Jr. finished seventh, after running as high as third, in the Firestone Indy 225 at Nazareth Speedway. For Cheever, who started 15th in the 24-car field, the finish was his best in four IRL races this season.
Rookie teammate Tomas Scheckter was held overnight for observation at Lehigh Valley Hospital in stable condition after his car crashed on the 121st lap. Scheckter, who started from the outside of the second row for Sunday's race, suffered a lung contusion and a concussion reported Dr. Henry Bock, Indy Racing League director of medical services.
Eddie Cheever on Finishing Seventh:
"The car was running very well. I had a terrible qualifying run, of my own doing, that put me behind the eight ball from the beginning, but the car was strong. There was no reason to get excited at the start of the race. The balance got better and better as we ran. On the last pit stop we fell back several positions. The crew has been under the gun this season repairing cars and has not been able to focus on their pit work as they should have. But the Infiniti engine ran very strong, and the mechanics put together some well-prepared cars, so we're pretty happy with that."
Richard Caron, General Manager on Race:
"We are glad to finally have Eddie and the No. 51 Red Bull Cheever Racing crew finish a race in what has been a difficult season so far. The Infiniti engines ran strong today which bodes well for the team heading towards Indianapolis. The next few weeks we will be working on our final preparations for the 2002 Indianapolis 500. In that time, we hope that both Tomas and Jaques Lazier have a speed recovery from their accident today."
