Sunny skies and temperatures in the 80's set the stage for this weekend's Purex Dial Indy 200 in Phoenix, AZ. It was a good start for Scott Dixon and Team Target. In fact, the race started out the way it ended in Homestead for the young Kiwi.
At the drop of the green flag, Dixon vaulted from his third place starting position up to first. Dixon then led the next 34 laps and had full command of the race until a gearbox problem ended the team's bid for three straight Team Target victories. He would finish the race in 20th place. Dixon was disappointed with his early exit from the race.
"The car was very good, but we had a problem with the gearbox," Dixon said. "It's really a shame because we had a chance to win another race. It's so disappointing to have a problem like this, but that's the way it goes. The Team Target guys did a great job and they are giving me cars that can win each race."
The bad luck also seemed to follow Dixon's teammate, Tomas Scheckter. Scheckter methodically climbed up to fourth from his eighth place starting spot. During a late race caution flag, Scheckter's team told him to 'Go for the win'. He followed those orders. On the restart a few laps later, Scheckter passed Felipe Giaffone on the outside, when he was hit in the left rear and spun into the wall. He was not injured in the accident and would wind up finishing in 15th place. After the incident, Scheckter expressed his feelings.
"I got a run on the outside in turn two and I thought that I was by him, until he hit me in the rear," said Scheckter. "The car wasn't perfect at the beginning of the race, but the guys kept working on it and it got better and better. Everyone at Target has done a great job and I'm proud to be a part of this team. The guys told me to go for the win and that's what I did."
The 34 laps led by Dixon are worth $850 for Target House and St. Jude's Children's Hospital. The total for the year now stands at $7,200. The next race for Team Target will take them across the globe to Twin Ring Motegi, Japan for the Brigestone Indy 300 on April 13th.
