Gil stars in gripping action at PPIR.
Gil de Ferran and Helio Castroneves started one-two and ended one-two at today's Radisson Indy 225 at Pikes Peak International Raceway. De Ferran, known as the "Professor" by his friends, could well be called the "Postman" as the rain and hail which hampered today's race did not prevent him from making his appointed rounds to collect his first victory in the Indy Racing League. Relying on the strong grip of his Firehawks, De Ferran delivered an impressive performance in heavy traffic through much of today's lengthy contest.
Quote from Joe Barbieri, Firestone Racing Project Supervisor: "The Firestone engineers developed a new tire compound for this competition, and from the quality of racing we saw today, it's obvious that new compound is a winner. Drivers had the grip and confidence needed for lots of two-abreast racing and great passing action. On a one-mile oval, where heavy traffic is inevitable, drivers must have strong grip to work their way through the pack. We saw that time and again today, with the Firehawks working flawlessly from start to finish. We tip our Firestone caps to Gil de Ferran for his dominating win today. He drove a masterful race and we are proud to be a part of his win."
Quote from Pole and Race Winner Gil de Ferran (Dallara/Chevrolet/Firestone): "My car was very, very consistent all weekend. The tires worked great, they had great durability, great grip. We were very pleased with the way they worked."
De Ferran Earns Firestone Performance Award: For leading at lap 63 today, Gil de Ferran earned the Firestone Performance Award and a bonus check of $10,000. The award celebrates Firestone being in all 63 IRL events conducted thus far - the only tire brand to be in every IRL race. De Ferran will receive his check at the June 29 event at Richmond.
Race temperatures ranged from 88 to 110 degrees track and from 78 to 85 degrees ambient (F).
