IRL to Return to Richmond for Fifth Straight Season

RICHMOND, VA August 3, 2004- When the IRL IndyCar Series announced four years ago it was going to race in a southern market on a short track, few guessed that it would find such a comfortable home at Richmond International Raceway. After four successful events that featured strong, enthusiastic crowds and exciting, side by side racing, Richmond International Raceway will again host the SunTrust Indy Challenge as part of the 16-race 2005 schedule.

The fifth annual SunTrust Indy Challenge is scheduled for Saturday, June 25 "under the lights." Also expected to be part of the weekend are the Dominic's of New York 100 USAC Weld Racing Silver Crown Series event and the USAC National Sprint Car Series "Showdown at Sundown."

"We were confident that the IRL would work at Richmond and our fans have truly embraced the SunTrust Indy Challenge," said track president Doug Fritz. "There's nothing quite like seeing IndyCars go side by side at more than 170 mph on a ¾-mile track. We've had good crowds, a tremendous race sponsor in SunTrust and we are looking forward to growing the event even more in the years to come."

The 2005 schedule, released today by the IRL, also featured some significant changes, as road course races at Watkins Glen International and Infineon Raceway were added to the schedule. Those events will be the first races in IRL history not contested on oval tracks.

The 2005 Richmond International Raceway schedule is close to completion. The 2005 NASCAR Busch Series and USAC schedules have not been released, but fans can expect the 2005 Richmond International Raceway lineup to include a NASCAR Busch Series and NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series doubleheader May10-12, the IRL and USAC events on June 24-25 and a Crown Royal IROC Series, a NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series, a NASCAR Busch Series and a NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series quadruple header September 8-10.
