RICHMOND, VA, June 27, 2003 - While dual practice sessions for Saturday night's SunTrust 250 were held under hot, muggy and sunny skies, storm clouds gathered at the appointed qualifying hour of 5:30PM EDT and, by the time the skies erupted for a quick and wind-driven shower, only 14 of 22 IndyCar drivers had taken their timed laps.
The Indy Racing League announced that, pending the 45-minute track drying session, qualifying would continue. If the track could not be dried, qualifying would be determined by combined practice times from earlier in the day.
In the latter case, Scott Dixon would take pole position in the #9 Team Target Panoz G Force/Toyota with a lap of 16.1144 seconds (167.554mph) with Helio Castroneves second in the #3 Marlboro Team Penske Dallara/Toyota at 16.1401 seconds (167.285mph).
If qualifying is able to continue, the remaining eight drivers will be looking to bump off Sam Hornish Jr.'s #4 Pennzoil Panther Dallara/Chevrolet, who was quickest in single-car time trials at 166.297mph. Tony Kanaan was second at 166.137mph in the #11 Team 7-Eleven Dallara/Honda.
