Harrington Gets CertainTeed #66 Dialed In at Atlanta

HAMPTON, Ga., July 15 - Coming off his stellar run at Pikes Peak June 27, Scott Harrington was 14th in the afternoon practice session and 16th in the evening practice session Thursday at Atlanta Motor Speedway, site of Saturday night's Kobalt Mechanics Tools 500 Pep Boys Indy Racing League event. His fastest lap around the 1.54-mile quad oval in the CertainTeed Building Products Dallara Aurora No. 66 was at an average speed of 213.16 mph, which he recorded Thursday night. His fastest lap Thursday afternoon was his 41st circuit, which he turned at 212.724 mph. Harrington, of Indianapolis, Ind. and Louisville, Ky., is recovering from a broken right leg, torn ligaments in his left leg and three cracked ribs suffered in a crash in practice at Texas Motor Speedway in June. Despite his injuries he almost won the most recent Pep Boys IRL race, and he's determined to get a top-five finish here Saturday night. "We're making headway," Harrington said while sitting on the pit wall Thursday night after his practice session. "We usually go quicker each session, so when qualifying comes around we should be in the hunt," he added before reaching for his crutches and heading back to the garage area. "We're working on the chassis. We'll be OK." "We kind of went backward there for awhile, but then we picked back up," added his father, team owner Gene Harrington. The younger Harrington, who made the entire sporting world sit up and take notice by almost winning the Radisson 200 at Pikes Peak International Raceway last month despite his injuries, said that he is feeling OK even though he is playing hurt. "The ribs are OK so far; pleasantly so," he said. "I'm still doing ultrasounds on the leg once a day. My doctor might be down here this weekend. If not I'll see him next week and see where we're at. Physically I'm getting better all the time. It takes time to heal, but I'm definitely more fit than I was at Pikes Peak, and we almost won that race. "I'm ready to win. I think our chances are excellent. We just have to be sure we don't make any mistakes and we have to be sure we're there at the finish. I feel we got cheated out of a win at Texas and at Colorado, and we have one coming. That's why I'm so pumped for this weekend." Anyone who watched Scott Harrington's drive in the Radisson 200 at Pikes Peak knows he has a lot of heart. So does Jesse Brown. This 14-year-old Scott Harrington fan received a heart transplant last May, and he'll be Harrington's guest this weekend here at Atlanta. Brown, of Orleans, Ind., received his new heart on May 10, 1998. He and his parents, Jan and Mary Lee, are big Pep Boys Indy Racing League fans. They met Harrington last year through a mutual friend, and last summer when Brown was able to receive visitors after his operation, Harrington and his sister visited him at home and brought him a basket of autographed hats, T-shirts, hero cards, etc. from Harrington and his fellow Pep Boys IRL drivers. "It'll be great to see Jesse again," Harrington said. "He'll get here tomorrow. Maybe he'll be our good luck charm here at Atlanta this weekend!" Harrington is scheduled to be the 12th of 28 drivers who will try to qualify at 6 p.m. Friday night. The 208-lap race is slated to get the green flag at 7:30 p.m. Saturday night. Qualifying will be broadcast live on SpeedVision beginning at 6 p.m.Friday, while the race will be covered live by FOX Sports Net beginning at 7:30 p.m. EDT Saturday.
