INDIANAPOLIS, Feb. 14, 2002– Kelley Racing driver Scott Sharp celebrated his 34th birthday today by preparing for the first IROC race of the season at Daytona International Raceway on Feb. 15. Sharp began his racing career at age eight and still believes that speed is one of the most exhilarating things you can experience in life.
“ Next to spending time with my family, racing cars is definitely tops on my list of things to do,” said Sharp.“ It’s incredibly thrilling. It’s like if you had a steering wheel on top of a roller coaster and was able to control the path. It’s seriously thrilling with the changes in G forces, the way the car moves and glides across the racetrack. You’re very much one with the car and you feel every subtle movement.”
Sharp was selected to compete in the 2002 True Value International Race of Champions following his 3rd-place finish in the 2001 Indy Racing League Drivers Championship.
“ You get the opportunity to race in IROC because of what goes on in the IRL and what the team’s been able to accomplish,” said Sharp.“ IROC is a lot of fun and I’m looking forward to learning some things this year. I hope to be able to hold my own and mix it up with those guys.”
Sharp’s gold-colored IROC car will lead the field in this Friday’s first IROC event of the season. The race begins at 11 a.m. and will be broadcast tape-delayed on ESPN Saturday, Feb. 16 at noon (EST).
The prestigious IROC series is contested among twelve of racing’s top drivers in identically prepared racecars on four superspeedways. The purse for the True Value IROC series totals over $1 million and will be paid upon conclusion of the final race of the season held at Indianapolis Motor Speedway on Saturday, Aug. 3.
