Sharp 17th After Big Moment in Infineon Qualifying

Scott Sharp is optimistic for a solid result in tomorrow's 80-lap Infineon Indy Grand Prix despite his 17th-place starting position. Sharp felt gains had been made at the conclusion of the third and final practice session this weekend prior to qualifying. However, the #8 Delphi machine got very loose exiting Turn Seven during the single-lap qualifying session and despite a good save, Sharp was left with an unrepresentative time.

Sharp finished 12th at Infineon Raceway last year in the inaugural IndyCar Series race, and is a past winner at the 2.26-mile, 12-turn road course in Trans-Am competition (1993). Sharp has claimed three top-10 results in five IndyCar Series road/street course starts to date.

Scott Sharp - #8 Delphi Panoz/Honda/Firestone: "This is frustrating, no doubt. Everyone is working hard. We came here with an all new setup and it just didn't seem to pan out as we hoped yesterday in the first practice session. We've scurried to make lot of changes and I think we definitely improved the car. We made a lot of changes last night and really started to get a pretty happy car at the end of this morning's practice. I was really just hoping to go out and duplicate the same kind of time and pick it up a bit. I had a halfway decent lap going and had a big moment coming off of [Turn] Seven. The rear just snapped on me and I thought I was going to lose all the way around and crash it. Luckily I caught it, but lost too much time and that killed the lap.

"For tomorrow, we seem to have a fairly consistent race car. We just haven't really been able to get the maximum speed out of it that the other guys have. But, from what the crew is telling me from watching other cars as you get longer into the tire life, we seem to run laps that are pretty competitive with other people. It is going to be a race of attrition, and we need to stay out of trouble and get the most out of it. Hopefully, with some good strategy and good pit stops, we can come out of here with a top-10 finish."
