Qualifying Penalty Sends Sharp to Back of Grid
Scott Sharp will make his first open-wheel street course start in over 10 years from the last row of the grid after incurring a penalty in qualifying for the Honda Grand Prix of St. Petersburg, the inaugural street course event of the IRL IndyCar® Series. Sharp was on his out lap prior to taking the green flag for his qualifying run when he went deep in Turn Four and off-course. Although Sharp was able to keep the #8 Delphi machine running, he needed assistance from the Delphi Safety Team to return to the track. Per IRL rules, no one is allowed to touch the car and Sharp was shown the black flag forfeiting his qualifying attempt.
Scott Sharp, #8 Delphi Panoz/Honda/Firestone:
"This certainly wasn't the position we wanted to start the race. Obviously it was a mistake on my part. We had so little time with the way the yellows went in practice this morning, you just had to go hard. I was pretty pumped up to put a good lap together and drove it into Turn Four too deep while things were still a bit cold. I overcooked my brakes and went into the run-off. I turned it around but needed the Delphi Safety Team guys to help me get going. I didn't think that was a big deal but I guess with the new rules, no one is allowed to touch the car. So sadly, we didn't get a chance to qualify and we have to start last. We have had a pretty good car all weekend, and I really felt we were going to be able to step it up for qualifying. The team is really experienced and really strong, and there will be some opportunities with strategy to get us up there tomorrow."
