ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- The sun-baked streets of St. Petersburg set the scene for the Indy Racing League IndyCar Series second-round event, the Honda Grand Prix of St. Petersburg. drivers Tomas Scheckter and Roberto Moreno will start tomorrow's event from positions eighth and 13th, respectively. Scheckter in the #2 Vision Racing Dallara/Honda/Firestone qualified with a time of 1:03.7143 while his teammate, Moreno; in the #20 Vision Racing Dallara/Honda/Firestone, recorded a time of 1:03.9455.
Scheckter rebounded well from the morning practice session where he touched the wall in turn 12, and went off the course in turn 13. He ended up 13th quick in that session with a time of 1:03.8406. The day before, Scheckter was ninth overall on the speed chart.
Moreno, who is filling in for regular Vision Racing driver, Ed Carpenter, was able to put together 17 solid laps in Saturday morning's practice session and recording the ninth best time of 1:03.0622. Moreno was a spot behind Scheckter in Friday's overall practice results in the 10th spot.
Vision Racing looks to move up the field quickly from the eighth and 11th spots when the green flag drops on the Honda Grand Prix of St. Petersburg. The 100-lap, 180-mile race starts at 3:30 p.m. (EDT) on Sunday, April 2 and will be broadcast live on ESPN, IMS Radio Network, XM Satellite Radio channel 145, and on the web at www.IndyCar.com.
Tomas Scheckter -- #2 Dallara/Honda/Firestone
On qualifying run: "It felt good, but we'll see. I think we have a great racecar and we seem to get even better the longer the run goes on, but to start the race in the top ten makes me happy."
On getting close to the wall: "That's the way it should be on most laps as you should be using all of the track. This morning maybe I used a little bit too much and that really hurt us for qualifying. I wasn't able to run with tire warmers this morning to see how far I could push the car during qualifying so we went a little conservative with the set-up. But overall I'm just happy to be in the top ten."
On new teammate for the weekend in Moreno: "He's done a great job and has a massive amount of experience. Just to have him on the team and to have his input has really helped us with the set-up of the car."
Roberto Moreno (Substitute) -- #20 Dallara/Honda/Firestone
On qualifying run and race: "My qualifying run wasn't the best and I was a little disappointed with it. However, the team gave me a great car, I'm really pleased to be here and I was thankful for being invited. We are looking forward to a good race tomorrow and we have a good racecar for tomorrow so I'm looking forward to it."
On returning to IndyCars: "It's so difficult to get back in the car and be competitive straight out of the box. I have to use all of my experience to be able to do that and keep it in between the walls. It's been great and the Vision team has given me great support. Larry Curry has believed in me from the word "go" and the family has given me all the support that I have needed. We are up to the job and we are improving every time. So tomorrow we are looking forward to a good race."
