Fort Worth, TX (June 10, 2004) -- Ed Carpenter will start from the 7th position for the Bombardier 500; the best qualifying start of his IndyCar career.
Carpenter's 207.855mph qualifying lap at Texas Motor Speedway earned his No. 52 entry the highest starting Chevy for Saturday's night race. The Bombardier 500 is the first of three night races on the 2004 IRL IndyCar Series calendar.
"We just hired a new engineer, Iain Watt, and you could already tell that the enthusiasm within the team has picked up," Carpenter said. "I had my best qualifying run and an all-around great day with practice sessions too. It helps that I've been to Texas Motor Speedway in IndyCars last year, so I had a good feel for the track before we even went out."
Teammate Alex Barron in the No.51 Dallara/Chevrolet/Firestone car was not as fortunate. Barron experienced a gearbox problem during his qualifying run. The car was unable to make a full qualifying attempt and will start from the back of the 22-car grid for the Bombardier 500.
"I'm going to have to look into this luck thing because it just hasn't been on my side all year," Barron said. "The engineers and crew put together a great car heading into qualifying but sometimes the breaks don't seem to go your way."
Earlier in the day, both Carpenter and Barron had strong runs in the practice sessions around the 1.5-mile oval speedway, with Carpenter earning the sixth fastest overall time and Barron the sixteenth.
Red Bull Cheever Racing drives for their first win of the season in the 200-lap Bombardier 500 on Saturday at 8 p.m. (E.D.T.) on ESPN.
