FIRESTONE FIREHAWK FAST FACTS
Indy Racing Northern Light Series
Chevy 500 at Texas Motor Speedway, Fort Worth, Texas
October 5-6, 2001

Race distance: 200 laps, 300 miles.

Firestone tires supplied this weekend: more than 800 (based on 8 sets per car for 25 cars).

Tires for Texas: The Firestone Firehawks for this weekend include a mixture of proven compounds. The tires for the left side of each car are identical to the tires used on the left side of the cars during the June 9 event at TMS. The right-side tires feature a slightly harder compound than was used during the June 9 competition. This compound was used at the Aug. 12 event at Kentucky and the Sept. 2 event at Chicagoland. The harder compound will offer improved wear and durability.

Past Firestone winners at Texas: Arie Luyendyk (June 1997), John Paul Jr. (September 1998), Scott Sharp (June 2000, June 2001), Scott Goodyear (October 2000).

Al Speyer, Bridgestone/Firestone Motorsports Director, on the tires for the Texas finale:

"It's good for us all to be back at work in the IRL, and we're looking forward to an exciting and safe race to conclude another exciting season. As we've said before, the one thing that you can predict about Texas Motor Speedway is that you can't predict much with accuracy. It's always a shootout, with plenty of surprises and lots of two- and three-abreast racing leading to an eventual winner. This is a phenomenal facility and one that is quite demanding of tires. We've run here since the recent repaving, and the new surface is nice and smooth. We should see a very fast race Saturday. The tires we've brought for this weekend's competition have a slightly harder compound for the right side of the cars, offering enhanced wear and durability characteristics. Since the first IRL race in 1996, our engineers and chemists have continually sought improvements in the Firehawks, giving these drivers a reliable foundation for their cars. We'll continue doing that, making sure every race is better than the last."

FIRESTONE "LEADER AT HALFWAY" AWARD:

In the six most recent IRL races of 2001, six different drivers have earned the $10,000 bonus from Firestone Racing for leading at the halfway point. That's quite a difference from the first six races, when just two drivers hoarded the award money. Topping the chart in "Leader at Halfway" awards is Greg Ray with four (Phoenix, Atlanta, Indianapolis and Texas I), followed by season champion Sam Hornish Jr. with three (Homestead, Pikes Peak and Nashville). Five drivers have earned the bonus one time each: Buddy Lazier (Richmond), Eddie Cheever Jr. (Kansas), Scott Sharp (Kentucky), Al Unser Jr. (Gateway) and Jaques Lazier (Chicagoland).
