Indycar Series Teams Continue Preparations for Texas Race
FORT WORTH, Texas, Friday, June 11, 2004 -- Speeds continued to climb as the IRL IndyCar® Series drivers continued preparations for the Bombardier 500k at Texas Motor Speedway.
Sam Hornish Jr. posted the top speed of the day with a lap at 211.331 mph in the heat of the final 30-minute warmup session. Teams spent most of the day working on race setups for the 200-lap event, scheduled for 8 p.m. (EDT) on June 12.
"I was honestly just trying to learn my way around the track, trying to get a good reference on the high lines and trying to get comfortable running side-by-side with the cars," said Adrian Fernadez, who will make his debut at Texas on Saturday night. "We're trying not to make too many moves and trying to predict what the other guy is going to do. This track is about respect for the other guys. I was trying to find my lines and trying to get comfortable. That's why I stayed out for as long as I could. I tried to run in traffic, so I could see what the car was doing. Overall, everyone behaved pretty well."
The Bombardier 500 will be televised live on ESPN and broadcast on the IMS Radio Network.
QUOTES FROM FASTEST THREE PRESS CONFERENCE:
VITOR MEIRA (No. 17 Rahal Letterman Racing Team Centrix Panoz G Force/Toyota/Firestone): (About starting 13th): "That was yesterday, and also, at Texas, qualifying doesn't mean much. It's big pack running, and it's about how good your car is running in a pack, inside, outside, carrying the momentum. It's all you're going to have here. We're pretty happy. The only bad thing about starting 13th is that you're surrounded by cars all the time, and sometimes, bad things happen in that kind of position." (About the reduction in speeds for 2004): "As long as you have 15 competitive cars around you, it's going to be just as hard. It's hard to say. It hasn't changed a lot. It's just become a little bit slower. It's just as hard with the good guys around us."
ADRIAN FERNANDEZ (No. 5 Quaker State Telmex Tecate Panoz G Force/Honda/Firestone): "I was honestly just trying to learn my way around the track, trying to get a good reference on the high lines and trying to get comfortable running side-by-side with the cars. We're trying not to make too many moves and trying to predict what the other guy is going to do. This track is about respect for the other guys. I was trying to find my lines and trying to get comfortable. That's why I stayed out for as long as I could. I tried to run in traffic, so I could see what the car was doing. Overall, everyone behaved pretty well." (Will it be an exciting night on Saturday?): "Yeah. Right now we're running during the day, and just like qualifying, the track will be really different. Obviously, the biggest thing that will change will be the reference, because the lighting, but it should be OK."
TOMAS SCHECKTER (No. 4 Pennzoil Panther Dallara/Chevrolet/Firestone): "To be honest, before we didn't do much running in traffic, we were just working on qualifying. With David Cripps, my engineer, we made some good changes overnight, and today the car seems to be very good in traffic. We passed some Hondas, which feels good in a Chevy. Obviously, it also shows that Chevy has been working hard. Maybe some people wrote us off a little bit after Indy, but we keep working hard and keep improving. Hopefully, we'll get a good result tomorrow."
