D&R duo lead the G Force charge at Texas finale.
Dreyer & Reinbold team-mates Sarah Fisher and Robbie Buhl led the G Force teams in qualifying today at the Texas Motor Speedway in preparation for the final race of the 2002 season - the Chevy Indy 500.
Fisher's time of 218.865 places her on the fifth row of the grid in 9th position, edging out team-mate Buhl who was 13th fastest at 218.387.
The performance from Fisher came despite putting a wheel in the grass on the front straight during her qualifying run.
"This track has two apexes on the front stretch, and coming down, I was ducking. I tagged the grass just a little bit, but it didn't hurt our time, so we were fine," Fisher said.
"We were just trying to give every effort. We were flat. Perfect car, perfect line, that's all she had. I think the race tomorrow is going to be a lot of fun."
Fisher, Buhl and the other G Force runners all believe their race pace will be stronger than their positions in qualifying.
"Sure, we'd like to be higher, but we have a good race car," Buhl said.
"This means nothing compared to where we can run. If you look at any track in the IRL, Texas has provided the most exciting wheel-to-wheel action as the norm, not the exception."
Top placed championship contender Felipe Giaffone was the third fastest G Force car, putting him 13th on the grid. Giaffone is in 4th place in the points standings and aims to finish the year with his second IRL victory.
"The car was a little slower than it was in the morning session because the track conditions changed a little bit," Giaffone said.
"We have to avoid getting involved in accidents, try to save the car, and attack in the final laps. I want so badly to win this last race."
Other G Force runners included Hideki Noda (21st), Will Langhorne (22nd) and George Mack in 24th. Previous Texas winner Jeff Ward was unlucky to suffer an engine problem just prior to qualifying and did not record a time.
G Force this morning launched its 2003 assault on the IRL championship - unveiling the design of its new car, introducing its new design team and announcing a name change for '02 to Panoz G Force.
"Our guys have had a tough time in qualifying this year, but as we announced this morning, we are working incredibly hard on reversing that situation for 2003," Panoz G Force Chairman, Don Panoz said.
"We have doubled our resources for '03, doubled our wind tunnel time and are leaving no stone unturned to ensure we have a championship winning car next year.
"We would love to finish the year with a win, that would give our program an added lift leading into the new year."
