June 6, 1997 - Texas Motor Speedway

Johnny spent this morning getting acquainted with the Jonathan Byrd/Cunningham Racing team and getting fitted in the #10 G-Force/Infiniti. Because this car is different than the Dallara that he drove at Indy 2 weeks ago, it took some adjustment for Johnny to be comfortable in the car. He also spent time studying the track and taking a few trips around it in a passenger car to familiarize himself with its high banks and overall layout. This was especially important due to the newness of the track and the fact that he missed the practice sessions earlier this week.

Late this afternoon, he was able to take the #10 car out for a few shakedown laps during the final practice session. He spent most of the session becoming comfortable with the car and the track, recording 26 laps and a top speed of 200.498 on the 1 1/2 mile oval.

Johnny will start from the back of the field tomorrow evening, as the team was unable to participate in the qualifying session on Wednesday evening. Johnny is planning to use the same approach to this race as he did in his start at Indy. He will try to be as smooth and consistent as possible, stay out of trouble, move up through the field safely and hope to be in the race at the end.

Johnny is very happy to be racing with the series leading team, and is looking forward to a great race.

We will have more updates for you tomorrow.
