Defending Winner Panther Racing Set For Sixth TMS Victory
Meira Looks to Extend Team's Reign as Winningest Team at Texas
FORT WORTH, Tex. (June 7, 2006) -- Defending race winner Panther Racing rolled into Ft. Worth on Wednesday with hopes of capturing its sixth victory at Texas Motor Speedway, which would extend the team's record as winningest team in the history of the 1.5-mile oval. Replacing last year's winner Tomas Scheckter in the No. 4 Honda is former Texas pole sitter Vitor Meira, who enters the weekend sixth in the IndyCar Series points standing.
Meira continues on a roll this season with his new team, and is fresh off his fifth career second place finish, captured last weekend at Watkins Glen. In six starts at TMS, Meira has three Top Five and five Top Ten results. He won the pole position here in 2002 -- just his fourth start in the league -- and finished third, two spots behind Panther's Sam Hornish Jr., who was the race winner that year.
The Panther victories at Texas have come from each of Panther's No. 4 car drivers; Scott Goodyear (2); Hornish Jr. (2); and Tomas Scheckter (1).
Scheckter won the 2005 event here from the pole position, leading 119 of the race's 200 laps before edging Hornish at the line for the win. Tomas Enge started second in the event, giving Panther a sweep of the front row, but experienced an electrical problem and finished 19th. Despite the electrical problem, Enge set the fastest lap of the race.
The Bombardier Learjet 500 will be broadcast live on ESPN at 9 p.m. (EDT), with additional coverage provided by the IMS Radio Network and on XM Satellite Radio Channel 145.
Vitor Meira Quote:
"Our team is really coming together and I think people can see that now. For the limited time we have been together we have shown just how strong this team is going to be. I'm excited to get to Texas Motor Speedway, which is a track where both myself and Panther have done well in the past. It's a long race and a lot can happen, but I know that we are ready and plan on some more great things."
