FORT WORTH-DALLAS (Sept. 12, 2001) - This weekend's Indy Racing Northern Light Series and NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series races at Texas Motor Speedway will be run with a modified practice and qualifying procedure.

Speedway officials, along with IRL and NASCAR officials, made the decision after receiving telephone calls and e-mails from fans urging that the races be run.

"It is the right thing to do," said speedway general manager Eddie Gossage. "Any decision we could have made will be met with approval from some and disapproval from others. However, auto racing is the most American of sports and our fans have made it clear that they want us to hold these races. It will be a time when Americans can gather together, begin the healing process and show the world that you cannot break us."

The American Red Cross also will set up collection points at each entrance gate to the speedway Friday, Saturday and Sunday. And - with the assistance of the IRL, Chevrolet, WBAP Newstalk 820, 96.3 KSCS-FM, ESPN Radio 103.3, The Dallas Morning News and RaceWorks Corporate Motorsports Marketing - the speedway will be distributing 50,000 American flags to the fans at the ticket gates before Sunday's Chevy 500.

"We know that our fans want to assist in the relief efforts," said Gossage. "And we know that our race fans will want to show their patriotism. We urge them to wear red, white and blue. Sunday will be a patriotic tribute to the American spirit."

The Dallas Morning News Pole Day schedule for Friday has been altered. The starting grids for the Silverado 350 NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series and the Chevy 500 Indy Racing Northern Light Series events will be set by entrant points. Drivers from both series are scheduled to participate in a public autograph session from 2:00-3:30 p.m. on the main concourse Friday afternoon. The truck series will then practice from 4:00-7:30 p.m. Gates 4 and 7 will open at 1:30 p.m. All seating will be general admission with coupons good for entrance available in The Dallas Morning News. Tickets will be $5 at the gate.

On Saturday, Gates 4 and 7 will open at 9:00 a.m. with an Indy practice session slated from 9:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m. Admission for the morning practice session will be free to the public. The stands then will be cleared with Gates 2-7 re-opening at 1:30 p.m. for the Silverado 350. Green flag for the race will be 3:30 p.m. as planned.

On Sunday, Gates 2-7 will open at 10:00 a.m. with the Indy Cars taking a final practice from 10:00-10:30 a.m. Kaptain Robbie Knievel will make the $10 Million Texas Indy Car Jump as planned at 2:00 p.m. The Chevy 500 will start at 3:30 p.m.

Preliminary events at the speedway also will go on as scheduled, including Wednesday night's Speedway Children's Charities Gala in The Speedway Club. Thursday night's Wolf Brand Chili Challenge UDTRA late model races and the Friday and Saturday night O'Reilly Texas Showdown Pennzoil World of Outlaw sprint car races at the Texas Motor Speedway Dirt Track are still planned as well.
