Team Target Set to Tackle Texas
Dallas / Ft. Worth, Texas, June 9th, 2004-- Texas has been good to Target Chip Ganassi Racing in the past and teammates Scott Dixon and Darren Manning are hoping that Texas's good fortune will continue to shine on them as brightly as the lights will for this weekend's Saturday night race at Texas Motor Speedway's 1.5 mile oval for the Bombardier 500.
At Texas in 2002, Target driver Jeff Ward edged Al Unser, Jr. by .011 of a second in what was at the time, the closest finish in IRL history. In fact, four of the closest finishes in IndyCar Series history have occurred at Texas Motor Speedway, the most at any track. With a new engine and aerodynamic package designed to slow cars, more wheel-to-wheel action is expected for the 200-lap event.
"A race at Texas Motor Speedway is always an event and battling under the lights just adds that much more to it. It's a great atmosphere, lots of fun and there's always a great crowd," says Dixon, who in 2003, qualified his Toyota/ G Force in second spot twice, finishing 6th in the night race, second in the season finale and was crowned the 2003 IndyCar series champion with the result. "I guess I have a particular soft spot for it because we've done pretty well here and it's where we won Championship. The month of May didn't really turn out the way we would have liked and there's still some room for improvement. The Texas race weekend will be fast and tough and we'll have our hands full but Target Chip Ganassi Racing is up to the task at hand."
Teammate Darren Manning, newcomer to the IndyCar series, has now had a few races under his belt and sees Texas as a good challenge to show what he has learned from his races to date.
"I've never raced at Texas but it has had some spectacular races for fans in the past," says Manning of the superspeedway's reputation for photo finishes. "It's a fast high banked track and I expect there to be lots of side by side action which I feel I am definitely ready for. Racing under the lights definitely adds something to a race weekend. It's fun for the drivers and for that fans and I'm looking forward to it."
Target Chip Ganassi Racing fans can watch the fifth race in 16-race 2004 season, the Bombardier 500 at Texas Motor Speedway LIVE on ESPN at 8:00 pm (EDT) this Saturday, June 12th or they can listen in on the IMS Radio Network. Throughout the 2004 season, fans are invited to follow the team's progress by logging onto their official website at target.com/racing for news, features, photos and much more.
