Schmidt Involved in Close Battle for Victory at Pike's Peak
Colorado Springs, CO: In a heated duel for the checkered flag, the Treadway Racing team with Sam Schmidt at the helm, made a mad dash for the final line, only to surrender to Greg Ray by a mere 0.120 seconds to finish second in today's Radisson 200 at Pikes Peak International Raceway.
The Treadway Racing Sprint PCS entry proved it had the power and consistency all weekend thanks to their Comptech prepared Aurora and the Firestone tire combination. As the race began, it was apparent that the Treadway Racing crew had it dialed in, as Schmidt was able to move into second position in the first lap of the race after starting fourth. He kept that momentum going and moved into the primary position as early as lap 24.
In an exciting battle over the 200 mile event, Schmidt and Ray swapped the lead throughout the race a total of six times, and Schmidt led a total of three times at 91 laps. With a combination of skill, balance and timing, the driver and crew of the Sprint PCS racing team sealed the Coors Light "Pit Performance Award" with a lighting pit stop near the end of the event, and enjoyed their second consecutive podium finish.
"Our run today was just about perfect," Schmidt stated emphatically. "The car was incredibly consistent and the powerplant really performed. The lapped cars slowed us up a bit, but it made for really exciting racing for the fans. We have really bounced back beautifully since Orlando and a third at Texas and a second place here is a credit to all of the Treadway crew and my engineer Jeff Britton. We ran our fastest lap about the second or third lap from the end, but it just wasn't enough to catch Greg. If only we had a few more laps! It was a fun race and it seemed to go so fast. I told Greg we should have gone another 100 laps for all the marbles, but he wouldn't go for it!"
This finish moved the team up through the standings to settle into 11th on the chart with 101 total points. The next stop on the Pep Boys Indy Racing League trail will be at the Atlanta Motor Speedway on Saturday night, July 17, 1999.
