INDIANAPOLIS, Monday, Oct. 20, 2003 -- Two-time Indianapolis 500 winner Al Unser Jr. was injured in an all-terrain vehicle accident Oct. 19 in Chama, N.M., according to his father, four-time Indy 500 winner Al Unser.
Unser, 41, suffered fractures to his pelvis in the incident and is hospitalized in his hometown of Albuquerque, according to the Unser family.
"I'm sorry this had to happen," Al Unser said of his son. "We had been riding on his property and just having fun. It's one of those things that happens when you least expect it. He must have hit a rock or something, because the ATV just rolled on top of him."
Al Unser Jr. won the Indianapolis 500 in 1992 with Galles Racing and in 1994 with Marlboro Team Penske.
Unser joined the IRL IndyCarTM Series in 2000 and finished sixth in the series standings in 2003, with a victory in the Bombardier 500 on June 7 at Texas Motor Speedway. He has three career IndyCar Series victories among his 34 career wins in major open-wheel competition.
Further updates on Unser's condition will be provided when available.
