Sharp Finishes Ninth at Watkins Glen
Scott Sharp came back from an 18th-place starting position to finish ninth this afternoon in the Watkins Glen Indy Grand Prix. An early pit stop on Lap Six with quick work from the Delphi Fernandez crew netted Sharp four positions, and he went on to gain several additional spots on course to capture his 12th top-10 result of the season. Sharp remains sixth in the championship standings, but has narrowed the gap from fifth position to six points.
Scott Sharp, #8 Delphi Panoz/Honda/Firestone:
"Overall, it was a really good day for the Delphi Fernandez team considering where we started. The crew gave me some great pit stops, and the car got better and better the longer I ran. My times came down to really good lap times. I could run with guys that qualified way ahead of me. I think we made a lot of progress today, and I wish we could start the weekend over again right now."
SCOTT SHARP FAST FACTS: This was his 114th IndyCar Series career start and 106th consecutive start-- claimed first win of the season in Kentucky-- is in his 10th season of IndyCar Series competition, and is the only driver to have contested every season of IndyCar Series competition since the inception of the IRL 10 years ago-- career record includes nine wins, five pole positions and 32 top-five finishes-- was the 1996 IndyCar Series co-champion and the 2001 Indianapolis 500 MBNA Pole winner-- is a former two-time SCCA Trans-Am Champion and three-time SCCA National Champion-- 37 years old from Norwalk, Connecticut-- currently resides in Jupiter, Florida.
Tom Anderson, Owner/Managing Director:
"I was proud of Scott's run today. Having more practice in the wet than in the dry, this was a learning experience for Scott and I am very pleased with a ninth-place finish today. We tried some strategy but the yellows didn't happen when we needed them. I think he learned a lot with 60 laps of experience and certainly a much stronger drive today than he had at Infineon with the Delphi car. Things are progressing in the proper direction and I am looking forward to more road races next year."
Chris Finch, Race Engineer:
"It was a good race for us. We started a little far back because of our qualifying effort, but we hung together and worked hard. The guys did an awesome job and Scott did a fantastic job out there, and we made some headway on the car. Scott did a solid 60 laps of running which he really needed in terms of understanding these cars on the road courses a little bit better and it gave us a better understanding of what we need to make the car faster."
