VISION RACING COMPLETES FIRST DAY OF PRACTICE AT WATKINS GLEN
WATKINS GLEN, New York -- Vision Racing drivers Tomas Scheckter , A.J. Foyt IV and Ed Carpenter took to the 2.45-mile road course at Watkins Glen International today in preparation for Sunday's Camping World Watkins Glen Indy Grand Prix.
All three drivers participated in both practice sessions on the day with Scheckter leading the team in the No. 2 Vision Racing Dallara/Honda/Firestone machine as he was 13th on the day and completed 45 laps.
Foyt, who had a session-ending off-track excursion mid-way through the morning practice was 16th in the No. 22 Honda powered Dallara. Foyt's crash into the tire barriers made contact with both the front and rear of the car, forcing him to retire early from the first session. His crew rallied to fix the car and get him back on track for the afternoon session. He completed 34 laps today.
Carpenter was 17th in the No. 20 Hitachi Power Tools special. A severed rear brake line ended Carpenter's afternoon practice session early as well, but he was able to complete 40 total laps.
Practice resumes tomorrow at The Glen with the IndyCar Series taking to the permanent road course at 9:45 a.m. (EDT). Qualifying for the 60-lap, 204-mile event will begin at 1:30 p.m. while the race will air live on Sunday, July 8th, at 3:30 p.m. (EDT) on ABC Sports, IMS Radio Network, XM Satellite Radio channel 145 and on the web at www.IndyCar.com.
Tomas Scheckter -- No. 2 Vision Racing Dallara/Honda/Firestone
"For sure we would have liked to have been quicker out there today, but overall we got a lot of good laps in, got to try a lot of different things and really get a good feel for the track and the car. So tomorrow we'll be back out in the morning to try a few more things and get ready for qualifying."
A.J. Foyt IV -- No. 22 Vision Racing Dallara/Honda/Firestone
"Unfortunately we had that accident in the morning practice which set us back a little. I was just trying to get used to a new track and I was on new tires, trying to be aggressive when my rear tire got loose and I went off into the tire barrier. I hit pretty hard so the guys had to work hard to get me back out by the afternoon session, but we made it and I was able to get back out and get some good laps in. We'll just keep after it tomorrow and keep improving every time we go out."
Ed Carpenter -- No. 20 Hitachi Power Tools/Vision Racing Dallara/Honda/Firestone
"Obviously I'm not happy with the times as you always want to be faster, but today was also a day just about trying different things on the car and getting adjusted to the track and everything. I think we've got a decent car; we've just got to get better in a couple of corners to improve our lap times. So we'll work on that tomorrow and keep putting together a good race car."
