STEWART HITS 165.540; CALKINS, JONES PILE UP MILES AT WALT DISNEY WORLD
ORLANDO, January 6, 1997 -- Tony Stewart turned the fastest lap of the day at 165.540 miles per hour. Davy Jones turned his first laps at Walt Disney World Speedway and Buzz Calkins piled up miles in the first Indy Racing League open test day Monday. Stewart turned 59 laps in Team Menard's G Force powered by an Oldsmobile Aurora.
Calkins drove 107 laps on Monday. Today's laps, along with the 105 on Saturday, puts 212 miles on one engine with Bradley Motorsports G Force/Aurora. He reached a speed Monday of 162.712 and hit 164.684 on Saturday. Jones, in his first test on the one-mile Disney oval, ran 102 laps and reached 162.433 in Galles Racing's G Force/Aurora.
Jonathan Byrd/Cunningham Racing's transporter arrived at Walt Disney World Speedway Monday and is expected to take the track with IRL point leader Mike Groff Tuesday in the first test of the new Nissan Infiniti Indy engine.
MEDIA ADVISORY: Indy Racing League open testing this week at Walt Disney World Speedway is open to media representatives. Please call 407/939-0526 and advise us that you're coming. Go to the Turn 1 tunnel entrance, sign in there and proceed to the infield as desired. Testing will take place 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily, weather-permitting.
QUOTES: DAVY JONES (first time at track): "I was here for a day (last year) just to look around. My first time around it was today. You can't really understand what it's about until you take a lap or two. I'm still trying to find my way around. It's a fun track. It keeps you on your toes. You have to focus on driving each corner. The thing that surprised me was the elevation changes. I really didn't expect that. It's our second outing (with the new car). We're starting fresh here, learning what the Disney track likes. Once we get comfortable, we'll start trimming it out."
TONY STEWART: "We went back after the first test, regrouped, took the things we learned and applied them to this test. We've got some stuff we learned in the wind tunnel, also."
LARRY CURRY (director of racing, Team Menard): "We've run 50-something laps today and oil pumps and water pumps have not been a problem. We think those things have been addressed. We're going to get as many laps on all our stuff as we can this week to reassure ourselves we can race for 200 miles. Everybody wants to go fast. We're all racers. But I want to go home Friday and say, yes, we can race these guys for 200 miles."
BUZZ CALKINS: "We're trying different stuff, making little changes. For some reason, the track's changed since Saturday. The weather's hotter and the car's loose. The engine's holding up, so that's a good thing. We're going to try to get 250 miles on it."
STEVE RITENOUR (Bradley Motorsports chief mechanic): "This engine seems to be running pretty good. We're going to run it again tomorrow. It still seems pretty healthy."
Richard Childress, owner of the NASCAR truck to be driven by Jay Sauter in the Jan. 19 Chevy Trucks Challenge, was a visitor to Walt Disney World Speedway Saturday.
