E.J. Viso: The Orbitalflow has Landed!
Is it a bullet? A plane? No! It's the Orbitalflow! For every race, a helmet. And for every helmet, a story. This week E.J. Viso presents the helmet he will be using at Kansas, the first of the ovals this IZOD IndyCar racing season.
When E.J. Viso (#8 KV Racing Technology) came to the United States to compete at the IZOD IndyCar Series, he caught people's attention not only for his driving skills and his passion for extreme sports, but also because of his helmets.
It's been a long time since those days in which leather "helmets" were in style on racing tracks. Over time, helmet personalization arrived -some helmets became icons, and later on, marketing and advertising landed on the drivers' heads. When that happened, drivers' personalities, which were reflected on their colors and designs at the time, were pushed into the background, and this led to the sale of ultra visible spaces for promotion.
However, helmets are still a personal thing. And in E.J.'s particular case, that is more than obvious.
"My helmets are like my signature. In a way, they define me as a driver," says E.J. with his always quiet voice. "My helmet designs are created by Juan Carlos -Juanco, my cousin. He knows me very well. He knows what things interest me and how I perceive racing... And he is also aware of the sponsors' relevance, so when there is a chance to include them, he does that, keeping the balance between their image and mine. Every race is different, so it is logical that each helmet has its own personality."
And Kansas will be no exception to the rule.
"Kansas is an oval; the first one of the season," says Juan Carlos, from his design studio in Milan (Italy). "From an abstract perspective, the secret of an oval is to find the most efficient trajectory and get into orbit, following its route. With the graphic for 'Orbitalflow' -as we baptized the helmet- we wanted to represent the magical moment (represented by the green diamond on the front) in which the data, the team, and E.J.'s experience converge in order to identify and reveal that 'path'. It is a design of pulsating, concentric ovals, almost kinetic, which reflects also the acoustic aspect of a race like Kansas, where the race track becomes a giant acoustic box for the constant running of the Dallaras, generating a kind of speed mantra of the sound."
Juan Carlos was born in Caracas (Venezuela); he studied Industrial Design in his native country and later traveled to Milan, Italy, to get his Master's Degree at the Domus Academy. Juan Carlos has worked with very important design firms, and has received prestigious awards for his work.
