DREYER & REINBOLD RACING QUALIFIED FOR THE MEIJER INDY 300
Sparta, Kentucky (September 3, 2010) - Dreyer & Reinbold Racing qualified for the Meijer Indy 300 in Sparta, Kentucky today. The team's drivers Justin Wilson (No. 22 Z-Line Designs) and Paul Tracy (No. 24 Motegi Racing Wheels) qualified 16th and 23rd respectively.
Wilson will be making his third appearance at Kentucky Speedway this weekend as he qualified 16th for tomorrow's race. Today, the Brit recorded a two lap qualifying speed of 215.944 mph. In 2008, he qualified 19th and finished in 24th place and in 2009 he started 8th and finished 21st, both early retirements were due to mechanical issues. Since joining the IZOD IndyCar Series in 2008, Wilson has recorded seven top-10 finishes (2008: Kansas-9th, Milwaukee-7th, Richmond-7th, 2009: Chicagoland-10th, Homestead-10th, 2010: Indianapolis-7th, Chicago--7th) on ovals. He has led on an oval twice, (2008--Kansas led for five laps, 2010--Indianapolis 500--led for 11 laps). Wilson's best qualifying position on an oval was 8th position at Kentucky in 2009.
Paul Tracy made his return to Dreyer & Reinbold Racing this weekend as he is filling in for the injured Mike Conway. Today's session didn't exactly go the way the Canadian had hoped. The team found some speed from the morning practice session and made changes to the No. 24 Motegi Racing Wheels machine. Unfortunately, so did the other teams and Tracy didn't qualify as far up the grid as he would have liked. As a result he will start 23rd for tomorrow's race. His two lap qualifying average was 214.270 mph.
So far this season, he has one start for Dreyer & Reinbold Racing under his belt (Watkins Glen). He was the sensible choice for DRR as not only does he have experience on ovals, over his entire career, he has competed in 270 Indy car-type events. Tracy, the 2003 Champ Car World Series champion, will be making his tenth IZOD IndyCar start and his first start at Kentucky Speedway. This will be the first time Tracy has raced on an oval since Milwaukee in May 2009. He is one of the most successful drivers in the history of open-wheel racing with 31 career victories.
What they have to say:
Justin Wilson, No. 22 Z-Line Designs: "It's been a reasonable day so far. The Z-Line Designs car feels pretty quick, but I don't feel like I've got a lot of grip. I've been sliding around a lot out there so I couldn't run any tighter in qualifying. Starting 16th isn't too bad, but we need to find a better mechanical balance which will make the car more predictable and allow us to take a bit more downforce off for the race. We've got another session this evening and I think if we can figure that out we can be quick in the race and get another great result for Z-Line Designs."
Paul Tracy, No. 24 Motegi Racing Wheels: "Today was a little frustrating. The team was expecting a better performance from that after having a pretty good race last week. We made the car better for qualifying and the car picked up speed from practice, but a lot of teams picked up a lot of speed and some struggled. It was a weird result. We are going to work on it during practice tonight and get it better for tomorrow."
